this is how i would do it for base.pcx (the quakeworld skin):
1.) open up base.pcx in MS-Paint
2.) click on "image" then "attributes"
3.) change "320" to "296"
4.) change "240" to "194"
5.) save as base1.bmp
6.) import base1.bmp into the player.mdl with a model editor
7.) all done! i think it should work
