Scientist Hunt

[an error occurred while processing this directive]

Scientist Hunt is a Half-Life modification which makes murdering scientists the objective of the game. There are two teams, and each team must compete to murder more scientists than the other team in one of three seperate modes of play. SH also features two non-team-based modes of play with entirely different player scenarios, named Live In Fear and Madness. New features include enhanced scientist physics, completely new scientist AI, and much more.

6:30 pm (EST): Someone started this site and asked me to link to it. So I'm linking to it. Go there. You can even send him SH images if you're lonely enough. Then you can form a friendship with him and maybe meet him some day. You'd like that, wouldn't you? Of course you would, because you're so lonely. Now go, discover your new companion for life.

2:30 pm (EST): I think I've straightened out all the stability problems, plus I've finished the Linux port, so I'm releasing a new version. Before I go on to mention what's new, I should mention that I'm fairly certain you're going to need glibc 2.2 to use the Linux port (as I compiled it under Red Hat 7). If you don't already have it or you try to start up an SH server and get an error message about it, you can most likely find it at rpmfind.net or gnu.org. If I do not see SH servers now, I.. I don't know what I'll do. Here is the usual list:

There is now a Linux port included with the distribution. Thanks to Marv for helping me figure out how to compile it under Red Hat 7. It may contain problems in some areas (such as a few bot problems), since I haven't tested it very extensively, but it seems to be alright for the most part.

Added a server option to make it so players cannot hurt each other in any game mode.

Fixed server stability. Hopefully it will run for days without crashing now.

Fixed a bug in the handcannon reload where you could reselect the weapon and have it reload at a faster speed than it should.
So, there you go. If you already have SH v1.1 installed, you can download a smaller upgrade file here. If you don't have SH or you have v1.0 or earlier, you'll need to download the whole package, which you can get here. So, that should be all, then. If you have problems, please visit my forums or IRC channel.

1:30 am (EST): Katto linked me to a favorable review of Scientist Hunt over at Frag-Energy, you can read it yourself here. Anyway, to get directly to the point, I've noticed that there seems to be a crashing bug or two in SH when being run on a dedicated server. Strangely, I cannot get this crash to show up with bots no matter how long I run, but I have noticed my dedicated server closing once in a while after a day or two of running. So, I'm running a dedicated server in a debug shell right now on my cable connection, and I would like everyone to come join and crush my bandwidth apart for the sake of stability testing. When the server crashes, I will see why and where, try to fix it, and restart so everyone can try to crash it again. I think this will probably be the best way to find any bugs, rather than using bots, since I suppose they are limited to set routines and might not explore every possibility on their own. So, then, the server will be running at hakuei.dyn.dhs.org on the default port (27015). Also, I started working on a Linux port a while ago. I'm having some problems, though, mainly that I cannot seem to get the HL SDK to compile under my Linux distribution. I think it has something to do with the "glibc" version I have, but I can't even get any older versions to compile (since some of the headers and libraries were very clearly changed in the version I have and no longer seem to like the HL SDK). So, if anyone has information specific to compiling the HL SDK under Red Hat 7 (I've been visiting various HL coding channels on IRC and no one seems to, which is unfortunate), please contact me and tell me what you know and I will love you forever. Other than that, please just come play on the server. Once I'm sure it's stable, I'll probably go ahead and do a tiny new release and a server upgrade package (since I'm only changing server code, which is why everyone can also still connect with the SH 1.1 distribution).

7:30 pm (EST): [SoD]Slayer has created a new SH level, called "The Blood of the Scientist". It's small, but still a nice level. You can get it here. On an unrelated note, SH has been chosen as Mod of the Week over at Planet Half-Life again (for the fourth time now, I think).

10:00 am (EST): Right, then, here is Scientist Hunt v1.1. A what's-new list from the readme.txt:

Added a new handcannon weapon. Thanks to Adam Smith (Katto) for the model and Oddjob for the sounds. There's also a wonderful server-side cvar called sh_hchorror for use with the handcannon, which will allow you to rapid-fire the handcannon (which was added just for fun and is not recommended for regular public servers, but is terribly enjoyable).

Added a new chainsaw weapon. Thanks to Adam Smith (Katto) for the model. There isn't much to say about it, except that it is a nice enjoyable unnecessarily violent horrible-amounts-of-gore-producing weapon.

Insanity has had various tweaks and adjustments. There are also now multiple levels of insanity, and a pretty insanity meter which stays in the lower-left corner of your screen while you're insane and tells you your level of insanity and how much insanity time you have left.

Added a good number of options Create game->Advanced options menu. There are options for extra chainsaw gore, chainsaw spark delay, handcannon gibbing, extra scientist gibs, and a number of other things.

Fixed a whole bunch of bugs in Live In Fear mode. It should be pretty much completely stable and usable now.

Increased the scientist needle radius for players (when playing as a scientist), to balance things a little better.

Finally fixed the filthy bug that was causing scientist to stay alive after being killed.

Improved wall-climbing. It should work much more reliably now.

Fixed a bug where walking onto slippery surfaces would make you act as though you were still walking on them after you got off.

Fixed a bug where scientists would freeze up after healing players.

Included a couple of Hondo's levels in the package rather than leaving them as seperate downloads. I don't think the overall file size is very large even still, anyway, and they're both just required levels that everyone should have. Also included insanity.bsp, which is a nice little messing-around level for insanity mode (consisting only of a long hallway and a bunch of scientists).

Many other adjustments and bug fixes have been made. The mod should be generally stable and useful now. If someone doesn't run a deciated internet server, I will cry.

So, there you go. It also comes in the form of a convenient self-extracting executable now, which will clear up any WinZip problems people were having (due to the settings.scr file in the archive). I've tested it overnight for stability with the default settings and it seemed fine. However, if you change any settings, you're venturing into unexplored territory and may possibly run into problems (but I have no idea). If you do find a crashing error and know exactly what's causing it, you can post in the forums and I'll see if I can track it down also. If you don't know what's behind the bug, though, don't bother reporting it. And I do hope someone decides to run a dedicated SH server (but note that it can get a bit bandwidth-requiring, particularly when you've got 50 scientists on a single level). I guess that's all. Have fun.

1:00 pm (EST): I decided to add another page to the gallery. It's filled with horrible chainsaw goodness, so go look at it.

8:30 am (EST): Quite a few things have happened in the past month or two to delay SH. Mainly me having a hard drive crash and the models not getting done. So, I'm going to be releasing it soon once everything as it is gets nice and fixed up and stable (which it already seems to be, I'm just doing more tests right now to be certain that it is). We'd hoped to have quite a few new weapons for SH 1.1, but we'll still have two new weapons, those being the handcannon and chainsaw. I'm sure they'll please you enough for a while, anyway, as they're both wonderful overly violent weapons. There's also a whole horrible giant load of bug fixes and quite a few new random features that I've put in over the past however many months. So, then, expect 1.1 sometime pretty soon. Until then, I leave you with this image (which is, naturally, an image of a bot chasing down a scientist and grinding into his back with a chainsaw).

HOORAY!!!

6:00 pm (EST): Someone I know has decided to be kind enough to run a public dedicated Scientist Hunt server on a terribly fast connection. The IP address is 128.103.177.34 (default port), so please stop by sometime. If I see someone playing there I'll probably go ahead and join also. By the way, the model work for v1.1 is still progressing slowly, but it looks like it'll still get done eventually. Hopefully the server will still be around to run 1.1 when it comes out.

 12-11-00 ==
10:00 am (EST): I have added another page to the gallery. That makes 8 pages and 72 images. This batch contains some particularly violent mass-slaughter images, so I'm sure you'll want to take a look at them.

 12-4-00 ==
4:30 am (EST): Another page has been added to the gallery, which now totals 7 pages (63 images). The first image on page 7 actually shows the new "insanity counter" which will be in the next version of SH. The insanity counter also shows you which "level" of insanity you are on by changing the expression on the little face (who I enjoy referring to as Mr. Unhappy). On that note, multiple "levels" of insanity is another thing which will be in the next version of SH. I'm not sure when we'll get that out, since it mainly depends on how long it takes to get the models we need for the new weapon(s) done. The handcannon is already finished, but we'd like to add some more weapons in addition to that. If anyone that can model, animate, and skin would like to help us by doing model work for us, then please contact me and I'm sure I'll be able to put you to work immediately.

 12-1-00 ==
10:30 pm (EST): I've just added yet another page to the gallery, for a total of 6 pages.

 11-29-00 ==
12:00 am (EST): Hondo and I played the in-progress version of SH for a couple hours tonight and got some fairly pleasing screen shots, so I've updated the gallery section with another page. The model we were using in all of the shots was Cardcaptor Sakura, which you can get over at Cold Fusion along with the models mentioned in the last update. I actually recommend all of OmegaLE's models, since every one that I have seen is shining and superior. Anyway, go look at the gallery.

 11-27-00 ==
4:00 am (EST): Hondo asked why we did not have an area on the site for violent and/or disturbing images the other day, and I could not answer him, because there was no reason, and a collection of violent and/or disturbing images is just what every site needs. So, I've put a new gallery section up. There's nothing there but Scientist Hunt pictures (the current total is 36), though not necessarilly all using SH-specific models and levels. The current images were also all extracted from the horrible collections of both Hondo and I. You may notice the handcannon model from AHL in there, which we were just using as a placeholder for a while (for the handcannon that will be in v1.1 of SH, which will be released eventually). One of the shots also features the current original handcannon model by Adam Smith that we intend to include with v1.1. The two custom player models you see Hondo and I using are Hibari and JTHM (Johnny the Homicidal Maniac), also, in case you want to know for any reason. I highly recommend both of them, since they're both just endlessly pleasing to use in their own seperate ways while committing random acts of violence. You can find both models over at Cold Fusion. Anyway, go take a look at it, since there's no reason not to and I spent a good amount of time writing all of the JavaScript for it. On that note, I've tested the gallery section out with the latest versions of MSIE and NS and it worked fine in both. So, if your browser cannot view it somehow, it's probably just terribly inferior and you need to upgrade it.
