Advanced Topic: Creating a custom decal texture

Sorry, this tutorial is not yet complete. I decided it was better to go ahead and provide the following details to you, instead of holding up this release of Wally. I'll be posting a finished version soon.

Topic: How to build a horizontal conduit for use with the Rivet tool

First, here are the RULES for colors in a "user colored" decal:
  • Shades of pure gray (same values for Red, Green, and Blue) are applied as shadows or highlights
  • Lighter grays are highlights and darker grays are shadows
  • Red is drawn in a shade of the left button color
  • Red == (128,0,0) will be the exact left button color
  • Blue is drawn in a shade of the right button color
  • Blue == (0,0,128) will be the exact right button color
  • Purple is drawn using a mixture of the left and right button colors
  • The sum of Red and Blue values should be no larger than 255
  • Green is used to indicate transparency
  • Green == 255 is invisible, 128 is half-visible, and 0 is solid (opaque)
I've provided several special Decal palettes for you to use.

Please examine Rivets.wad, BulletHoles.wad, Patterns.wad, and Signs.wad and investigate the decals I've provided.

Notice how some of the rivets look like red plastic and some of brackets look like blue plastic. This is what your custom decals need to look like in order to let yourself (or another user) draw a decal in the left/right button colors later when drawing with a decal tool. The plain gray "bump" images don't use colors; they just add shadows and highlights to the existing texture. You can combine both effects in the same decal image to create a colored rivet with a shadow below!

  • Save as "MiniTut6"

As always, Ty and I look forward to receiving textures for Made With Wally. If you send decal artwork, we might even add it to one of our decal wads! I urge you to consider submitting a sample or two of your work to share with the gaming community. Of course, you'll receive full credit. :-)
