09 May 1999 - GameCam and HeadHunters II

I've recently integrated the GameCam camera algorithms into HeadHunters II as part of its latest release (v2.6). It's the cool mod with the cool camera. (So I'm biased. Sue me ;-)

This is probably the last version of GameCam for Quake II.
But don't worry, I have plans for Q3A. I realize that the plug-in concept is unlikely to be applicable to Q3A, but the camera algorithms themsleves can still be used. Expect a true cinematic experience, because that's what I'm aiming for.

In the meantime, check out this demo - gcdemo.zip. It's a demo of a bunch of Gladiator bots hacking at each other on q2dm1. Enjoy!

22 Apr. 1999 - GameCam v1.02 Released

Think about penguins ...
Now, think about penguins running amok holding cameras ...
Huh ?!

Well, I finally got around to porting GameCam to Unix ;-)
It's currently available in four flavors: Win32 (Intel), Linux (glibc), Linux (libc5) and Solaris (Sparc).
I had to make some code changes so as to make it work on Unix, and fixed a minor bug along the way (the ticker tape scrolls smoothly - no more jitter). Note that the Unix install procedure is different than the Windows procedure, so read the instructions first!

Special thanks go to Kip "devide" Kulich of frag.parrett.net - he compiled and tested the Linux binaries.

ENJOY THE SHOW!

20 Mar. 1999 - "blank" Plug-in Mod and other updates

A few updates:

  • The "blank" plug-in module - it does nothing. So why use it?
Well, first of all it comes with source code, so that anyone can build his/her own plug-in mod.
Second, it can be used to load any number of other plug-in mods based on it (I refer to this feature as "proxy mod chaining"). Get it at the download page.
I meant to add a coding tutorial, but I have neither the time nor patience. If you have any questions just e-mail me at zungbang@telefragged.com.
  • EntZ - yet another plug-in mod I cooked up a while ago. This little baby replaces the built-in entity list with a list loaded from an external .ent file. You can use it to move, add, remove and otherwise modify the entities in any map with most mods. It also comes with source code.
  • ZKick update - I've tested it against hacked ZBots almost three months ago and confirmed that it still works. Just in case anyone was worried.
  • GameCam and BW-Admin - I've added some instructions for using GameCam together with BW-Admin. This procedure may also work with Q2Admin, but I haven't checked. Note that I don't support this configuration. If you have any problems with it either use ZKick or don't use GameCam.
  • HeadHunters v2.5 - That's my attempt at normal mod coding (=
It's an update to my favorite mod - HeadHunters by Charlie Zimmerman. Monsto Brukes is in charge of this production and will soon release the new version. Check out the HeadHunters site for more details.
  • GameBot - that's my current project. It's a plug-in bot system. It's currently in early alpha and not really playable. The previously released lamebot demo shows off one of my bots getting his ass whacked by several Gladiator bots. 'Nuff said.

I should really update more often ...

20 Feb. 1999 - GameCam v1.01 Released

This release is a major redesign. The new GameCam is simpler to use, more compatible and just damn better looking than ever.

What should you expect?

  • improved ACTION camera - the default camera mode is cleaner, tighter, and has support for fixed cameras
  • enhanced CHASE camera - the camera position can be manually adjusted or left for the computer to handle (works very much like CreepCam for classic Quake)
  • simple user interface - no need to figure out any commands: just type spectator 1 (as usual!) to become an observer, and use the new camera menu to control it
  • automatic demo recording! - unique names for demo files, stop/restart upon level changes, available to all players (not just spectators)
  • unique ticker tape feature - this is an animated text ticker tape that can be programmed to show network friendly score updates, server news, rules, stats, ads etc.
  • new security features - for example: spectators can't improve their ranking on services like CLQ by chasing high ranking players, because their names show up as [CAMERA]name when queried by GameSpy, QStat etc.
  • and more ...

GameCam is a transparent mod, which means that it can be added to any other mod. But it ain't perfect - while it's been tested with several popular mods (on public servers!), it can't be tested with all of them, and there are known compatibility problems. However, chances are that it can work like a charm with your mod. So ...

ENJOY THE SHOW!

30 Jan. 1999 - GameCam v1.00 Demo

Yup. I'm still alive.
Been very busy doing real-life stuff, but I've managed to put some work into GameCam v1.00. This final release will be ready in a few weeks. I've recorded a short demo illustrating some of the new features (you'll need the Homer PPM and the map ztn2dm2.bsp to view it).
Enjoy the show.

Seems that the counter was reset a day or two ago ... it reached some 1400 hits before it died. Cool.

26 Nov. 1998 - ZKick v1.01 Released

New to this release of ZKick (my anti-ZBot plug-in) is an option to force clients to connect directly to the server, without any proxies in between. Note that this will mess with legitimate proxy connections, so the option is disabled by default.
Zkick is available on the download page.

18 Nov. 1998 - GameCam Has Been TeleFragged!

After over 2000 hits at GeoCities, GameCam is now hosted by TeleFragged - ah ... the joy!

06 Nov. 1998 - New Web-Site is Up

Duh, you're looking at it ...
I've applied to be hosted at a major gaming site, so expect this site to move to greener pastures.

06 Nov. 1998 - Version 0.25 beta Released

New to this release is a tournament mode, where all clients start as spectators, and only a limited number of players are allowed to join the game. The rest just sit back and enjoy the show :-)

This version corrects some problems in v0.24 "HeadGames Edition". GameCam v0.24 was used in the recent HeadHunters Halloween tournament - "HeadGames ][ - The Mother of All Head".

Many thanks are due to Monsto Brukes, the main man at HeadHunters, for suggestions, bug-testing, loud promotion, and enthusiasm.

Monsto recorded demos of most of the matches, so be sure to check out the tournament demos at the HeadGames ][ page - they're pretty intense!
